The aim of this edition is to bring together scholars to rethink the methodologies used to study women artists and their histories. More than fifty years after Linda Nochlin’s seminal question, the conference revisits the assumptions and narratives that have shaped feminist art history. It focuses on women artists in Italy from the opening of the Accademia di San Luca to the nineteenth century. The conference explores artistic training, academies, workshops, and alternative forms of education, and examines professional networks, patronage, mobility, and women’s participation in the art market. Particular attention is given to women as teachers, workshop leaders, and agents of artistic transmission, as well as to questions of authorship, self-representation, artistic identity, and family workshops. The conference further considers archival, philological, and historiographical challenges in reconstructing women’s artistic production, and seeks to open new perspectives on women and gender in the arts.
